Typescript of Markham's famous poem, "Lincoln, the Man of the People," possibly the first draft. The typed poem is noted as having been read "at the Lincoln Birthday Dinner given in 1900 by the Republican club New York City." The title when read was "Lincoln, the Great Commoner," but has been corrected by Markham to read "Man of the People." Extensive corrections have been made by Markham throughout. Also included is a letter from Markham to Dana H. Ferrin, 1920 February 27, regarding a mix-up in the printing of the Lincoln poem.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
